What makes me tough!

I'm excited to be part of such an awesome and inspiring team of women for 2013. Next year I'll be donning my Team Tough Chik running tees for some of my races. Read what makes me a Tough Chik here...
And I'm especially pumped that today I signed up and coughed up the money for my first 2013 race (it's not likely to be the first race I do in the year, just the first one I've monetarily committed to - the money bit is relevant - I normally have an incredible habit of mentally committing but procrastinating like crazy when it come to actually registering and paying!!) The first step to my 13 in 13....

So on May 26th I will be running the Abbotsford, BC 'Run for Water' 1/2 Marathon. Woo-hoo!

My fitness has already taken a major backseat for the holidays since our flight back to England on Monday - I'm just about keeping up with the holiday Squat-a-thon Challenge I'm playing along with this month (so dedicated I even did 90 squats in an airplane toilet on Sunday evening somewhere above the Atlantic ocean!) but apart from that.....I forgot how wild, windy and wet the UK was so haven't ventured out for a hike, let alone a run....maybe tomorrow ;-)

Washi Tape Christmas Decoration

This makes me happy. This corner of our great room felt a little bare to me at this time of year - this is where we'd normally have a gorgeous 8ft Noble fir tree. But alas, this yeat it ain't happening. But what WAS happening was a little washi wonder!
Washi is so perfect for temporary decorations - it sticks well to paint but peels off easily and doesn't leave any marks!

First up I cut 3 red cardinals with my silhouette machine, along with 2 sprigs of holly and berries
I used a brown tape to roughly design a few tree branches coming out from the corner of the room. I didn't follow a plan; just kept sticking away till it looked right - and I was just tearing off strips of tape as I went - no scissors or ruler required! I wanted to make sure to have a couple of flat-ish gaps where I would position a few little red cardinals so I did keep that in mind as I went.

Then I just stuck on the birds and holly with blue-tack.

And there you have it! It fills the space perfectly and stops me feeling like there's a hole where a tree should be!

Homemade Christmas

It's been tough for me not having a Christmas tree this year, but really I know it's a waste since we're not going to be around. And I know I'll be grateful that when we get back we don't have a tree to clear up and pack away!

I have still decked up the house though. And when I was putting all our stuff out I realised how much handmade decorations we have now, all since moving to Canada - love that!

This banner I made a couple of years back but this year is the first time hanging it upstairs on the mantle - I think it looks great here. I cut all the banner pieces and the letters with my Silhouette machine and threaded them all onto some red & white bakers twine.

The clip stand on the far left is the project I made in Teresa Collin's class back at Inspired Journey (you can see the original project when I blogged about it here) when I attended in May down in California. Again the designs were all cut with my Silhouette - though I don't recommend ever cutting that title out again - it was way too fine to suit being cut! You can see a better photo of it below.
The tree I made with lots of strips of Christmas papers pinned onto a polystyrene cone - it was time consuming but I do love it - my only small regret is that I didn't pick traditional greens and reds for the papers - I do like my traditional colours really - but when you're shopping for scrapbooking papers it's easy to get caught up in the 'fashion' of the latest collections and that year was blues, greens and pinks - ho hum!

My hanging 'mobile' of Christmas 'balls' I used 8 pre-cut circles (cut with the Silhouette machine of course!) and folded them in half and stuck the halves back to back then stick the final one to the first - then you can fan them out into a complete ball. I then threaded them onto embroidery threaded and topped and tailed each ball with some silver beads. 

And finally I whipped out the Silhouette (again!) for my Reindeer on the window - cut from white vinyl - it's a bit of regular decorating spot for me, in the past I've had snowflakes but this year it's a little herd of reindeer!! And look outside the window - sunny blue sky days in Canada and not an igloo in sight!!

Thai Coconut Curry Pumpkin Soup

We had so many pumpkins left over from our fall decorations and my slightly obsessive need to buy fresh squash from the farmers stalls before they closed for the year that it was time I did something with them.

After checking out a few things online about making my own puree and set to work. All I did was cut them open, scoop out the innards and slice into wedges and bake skin side up in a 350 degree oven for around 50 minutes. Once cooled I peeled off the skins and threw them in the food processor and pressed the on button. And let it do it's stuff. It changed pitch when it was done - like there were no more lumps to work through and it spun easy in the liquefying puree. And then I just measured out cup sized portions into freezer bags and popped into the freezer. (some directions I read up on suggested straining the puree, but I'm all for leaving out messy steps like that for an easier life - and I really don't think it needs it)

So now I have wonderful fresh puree. And I gotta say - don't buy canned puree ever again - I know it's pure, has nothing added etc etc but this tastes so.much.better and really is ridiculously easy!

It didn't quite all fit in the freezer (What with my freezey canned tomatoes and half a moose that hubby brought back from his hunting trip in the plains of northern Alberta last month - nothing like fresh, organic meat!!) so I decided to make some soup.

  • 1.5 cups pumpkin puree
  • 1.25 cups of stock (I used chicken, but veggie would be great too!)
  • 1 clove garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 green chili (finely chopped)
  • 1 inch cube fresh ginger chopped
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup brown rice (uncooked)
  • 1 Tbsp Thai green curry paste
  1. Saute the onion and garlic until lightly brown
  2. Add pumpkin, stock, garlic, onion, chili and ginger to a blender and blend until smooth
  3. Add to a saucepan along with the rice, coconut milk and curry paste and heat slowly for around 1/2 hour or until rice is cooked (I actually turned mine off after 20 mins and came back a couple of hours later - the residual heat, and being sat in liquid was enough to cook the rice)
  4. Bring to temperate ready for serving
  5. Garnish with some fresh cilantro and black pepper

This is my final week at home before heading away for the holidays. As far as my menu planning goes, its simply a case of using up what's in the fridge and pantry! We've got a couple of leftovers meals in the freezer from a few weeks back (Taco Casserole and Veggie Lasagna) and I could really use the space and my Tupperwares back so they'll be on the menu. We also have a date night meal out planned, and the rest will probably be soups and salads (with potatoes - we have lots of potatoes to use up for some reason!!)

Fitness goals for 2013

I have lots of ideas sloshing around in my head about what I want to do running-wise this coming year. I'm not really one to make radical resolutions (apart from daft things like wanting to run a marathon in 2012!).
But I think that was always due to a little lack of confidence in my fitness ability. My first 1/2 marathon was originally a 10km, and it was only weeks beforehand that I switched my entry once I know my training was going well. But running that marathon taught me a fair bit about myself, not least that 'finishing a marathon is a state of mind that says anything is possible'
Currently this is what I think I want to aim for in 2013;
  • Become a Half Fanatic (and I think I'm likely to try and achieve this by running 2 Half Marathons in 16 days - although actually my potential races are actually back to back weekends so I will hopefully achieve this in 8 days - my goal races being the Run for Water in Abbotsford, BC on May 26th and the Whistler Half Marathon on June 1st)
  • Run 13 in 2013 - A few people on my blogroll had done 12 in 2012, and they were all running half marathons.  For me that seemed a little ambitious (and too expensive with all those race entries totting up). But for 2013 they've opened it up to be able to run a combination of distances throughout the year totalling 13 races. Plus virtual races count. Many virtual races are free so that eases the money concern and often have some flexibility over when and where you do the run. The organizers are even hosting 4 virtual runs to help you on your way to 13! I'm in!
  • 5 by the 5th - Laura over at is hosting a series of virtual races from January through June - pick your distance - 5km or 5m and log your run. This is totally do-able for me and I'll have the fun of participating and virtually interacting with my fellow runners (plus they'll be counting towards the 13 in 2013.
  • Do a Triathlon - this is probably my sketchiest of goals. Honestly I don't normally 'lay it out there on the table' unless I'm fairly confident it's achievable. But this....I hate cycling, I'm not keen on swimming.....but it IS something I would love to have accomplished (yes past tense - I want to HAVE done it, not DO it!!) But there's only one way to get to the past tense eh?!

Other tentative race plans include the Vancouver Sun Run 10km, either the Seattle Rock n' Roll Half or the Vancouver Tough Mudder (have to decide as they're on the same weekend) and I expect some Fall Half to finish off my season. Sounds busy doesn't it?! Maybe I won't have too much trouble with the 13 in 2013 after all!!

Etsy Shop

I've had my little Etsy shop for a while. It stemmed from me creating gifts for friends and family - I would digitally design a card and then print it and add to a frame - voila! a perfect and unique gift! But playing around in Photoshop becomes addicting and so I just carried on creating! My latest shop update includes a selection of new quote cards.

For the simple Inspiration quote cards (as shown) they come in at least 2 colour-ways and at least 2 background images - and all can be mixed and matched at checkout - so you can go some way to personalizing it! If that's not enough then I can also do a custom order - you pick the colours, background image and quote and I will custom create it for you!

I have been using these as teacher gifts and at work for our secret Santa exchange - I've printed them out and added them to a frame (you can get cheap ones at the Dollar store or with a coupon from Michaels so it doesn't need to be expensive) They've been an absolute hit - and for around $6 total including the printing of the photo!! All my cards are designed using Photoshop. I send out a high resolution .jpg file so it can be printed at home or uploaded to a photolab. It can be printed as many times as you like!

Crockpot Italian Turkey Meatballs

Instant success with these - they were just so tasty! Do try out this recipe - you'll be glad you did!
Ingredients (serves 3)
For the meatballs;
  • 1 lb Ground Turkey
  • 1 Tbsp Flat leaf parsley finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Ground Black pepper
  • 2 Shallots finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp parmesan cheese
  • 1 clove garlic finely chopped
For the Sauce;
  • 1 small can chopped tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 Tbsp Flat leaf parsley or basil finely chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 clove garlic finely chopped
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
Mix the meatball ingredients together in a bowl and form balls (around 1"). Place all sauce ingredients into bottom of crockpot and stiry well. Place meatballs on top of sauce and cook on low for 4 hours. After the first 2-3 hours of cooking gently spoon sauce over meatballs (being careful not to break up the balls)
This is my last of 10 new Crockpot recipes I tested and mastered* (got to be done twice to make sure the first time wasn't a flook before it's considered 'mastered'!!) - ticking off that particular item in my 2012 manifesto. Seems kind of surprising that I only managed 10, but anything that had been done before couldn't count! We now have 10 great recipes to add to our little repetoire!!

What's on the menu..

This is my new favourite breakfast...or snack! We decided that after having smoothies for breakfast for the longest time it was time to look at the nutritional value, and decided that we may not be getting enough protein to start off our oatmeal was back on the menu.
I've been loving these overnight oats recipes and have tried out a few that I'd seen on Pinterest, but in the end I just went with what I know and love and concocted something myself (besides we still have about 40lbs of apples in our garage!)
It's totally delicious either warm or cold.
Ingredients (makes around 6-8 servings)
  • 1.5 cups steel cut oats
  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds
  • 2.5 cups Almond milk
  • 1/2 cup Almond butter
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2.5 cups unsweetened Applesauce
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup
Soak the oats and chia seeds overnight in the milk in the fridge. Next morning add the rest of the ingredients and stir well. Store ready to eat in an airtight container in the fridge.
We are creatures of habit, especially when it comes to breakfast, so after having smoothies to start our day for the last 4 years this was pretty ground-breaking stuff to be switching to something new!!
Had a couple of little upsets to my menu planning this week - Costco snacks do that!! (and then you get home having wrecked your appetite so just snack in the evening coz a full meal is a waste) Anyway. Anything we don't eat this week we'll be rolling forward to the next week's plan.
Really trying to make sure we're getting in plenty of veggies in during this holiday season - in a meagre attempt to balance all the indulgences!! something hubby.

Elf 4 Health week 1

signed up for Elle and Lindsays Elf 4 Health challenge that started Monday and runs for 6 weeks over the holiday season and into the new year. It's a great way to stay just a little (or a lot!) accountable for your health, fitness and general well-being. There's certainly plenty of us out there that could do with a little help in that department - after all around 600 signed up! Every weekday there are fun daily challenges to help you along the way. 

Every 2 weeks you get assigned an 'Elf', and in return you're their 'Elf'. The idea is simply to mentor each other through the 2 week period, supporting them with their holiday health goals and the daily challenges. (then after 2 weeks you switch partners - so it's also a great way to meet 3 new cyber-buddies during the challenge).

I've been paired with Kelly over at No Sugar Sweet Life. She's been an awesome buddy giving me lots of great tips and sharing recipes - we're emailing back and forth every couple of days. Funnily enough we've both flunked on the same challenge so far (We're obviously not writers!) There's also a very active facebook group and we're using the hashtag #elf4health to tag photos on our instagram feeds. So far so good!

My goal is simply to stay AWARE this holiday season.

I don't really need to loose weight, but I would like to maintain it (the last 2 years I've had a habit of getting to an 'ideal' weight for me towards the end of the end and then slowly it creeps back on from Xmas through till Easter, at which point I go through the cycle again of slowly shedding blah, blah....  Right now I'm back at pretty much my 'ideal' weight - and would really like to not see a spike up again - I know Christmas is just the start of that slippery slope for me.

I stay in pretty good shape so I'm not too worried in that department.
For the actual Christmas period we're heading back to England. This is sure to be a food and drink fest. What with all the regular festivities, different family 'homes' for variations on the Christmas celebration (and all the food to go with it) There's also all that food that I've missed that we don't get here - English Sausages, a GOOD Indian Curry, Real English scrumpy cider, various Chocolate bars, snacks, pork pies, Cornish pasties.....oh the list goes on. (Oh, and even though I'll pack my running shoes I can almost guarantee they won't see the light of day for 2 weeks!! - Exercise and vacations just don't mix in my experience) - that will be my tough 2 weeks. So with all that said, I want to head back to England in the best possible state of mind when it comes to feeling healthy.

So really I want to stay aware of what's going on...mainly in regard to the choices I'm making - choices in food, exercise and general well-being. Chris and I are keen to start changing our diet and make better choices. We don't eat that badly - most everything is home cooked from scratch but with his coursework (currently studying to be a health and nutrition coach at IIN) our eyes are constantly being opened wider and wider to even better choices for our food particularly.

This weeks challenges have been fun;
  • Monday - go meatless! We had a Baked Potato and Salad
  • Tuesday - Write a handwritten note (OK I flunked this one!)
  • Wednesday - Try a new workout (I actually did this one on Thursday, but I checked out the Nike Training Club app on my iPad to find a different and new workout - I did a 45 min strength routine - with a HECK load of squats and pushups - ouch!)
  • Thursday - Start the day with a 15 minute meditation - check! This is pretty new to me - having just dabbled in Dr Deepak Chopra's 21 day meditation challenge - I had a few days left over that I had'nt listened to, so I used one of those. It really is a lovely way to spend 15 minutes at any time of the day.
  • Friday - How many colors can you eat?! Tonight we'll be having veggie stir-fry - I've had it planned out all week. Got red cabbage, yellow and red pepers, zucchini, fresh parsley, carrots, green onions, broccoli, mushrooms and whatever else is in the fridge come this many is that?!

My Non-Thanksgiving run

So here in Canada we are SO over thanksgiving!! It was, like, a month ago already! And since I'm English we don't celebrate a 'thanksgiving' anyway (I don't think it's because the English aren't thankful, just we don't really have a day to celebrate!)

However since most of my cyber-buddies, plus a splattering of family are down in the good ole' US of A the holiday doesn't escape unnoticed! (and our retailers readily jumped on your Black Friday sales madness) With all your turkey trotting I was utterly guilt-tripped into heading out on my own little run of thankfulness yesterday morning!

So darn it, I did. Actually my first run in, oh, eight days. I know the shock, horror of more than a week going by without lacing up my runners. But head out I did. The pup had to wait for her walk this morning coz the priority of the day was Mama's run.

And it was good. I had hoped to maintain a level of running fitness over this winter with my long runs being in the region of 10 milers. But actually I'm not sure that's going to happen.

Because what I thought about, on what turned out to be my 8-miler today was this.....

My name is Helen. And I am a seasonal runner.

There. Said it.

It's that whole post goal race, dark evenings, winter blues. For some reason, at this time of year running just isn't quite as pleasurable for me. And it should be. I know, because for the most part, in the summer months I truly do love it, and for some inexplicable reason I have no problem leaping out of bed before the sun rises.

2 winters ago, I officially 'retired' for the winter months. I spent too long feeling guilty about not going out and it started sitting heavily on my shoulders to the point that I was getting down about it forever being on my mind. Last winter I sprained my ankle so I was (conveniently?) out of action anyways.

This year.....

I'm still not completely sure what I'm going to do. I think it's important to not force it, otherwise I'd fear I'd start hating it - and I can't assume the love would return with the warmer weather.

I kind of made a deal with myself before....that I'd run till the snow came. But actually...what if the snow doesn't come?! It's not just the snow. It's the dark nights, the cold, the rain. The fact that indoors is way more cosy and frankly I should be sitting by the fire supping cocoa or something! (I know, I know first world problems right?! - I'm such a whiner!)

What I have been doing is tonnes more strength training and toning. It's indoors, it's 45 minutes, it's the convenience of being at home. I've been using the Supreme 90 set of DVDs for a couple  of years now. In the summer months, with my running taking priority I'd maybe only do 2-3 videos a week. Now I'm back to 5-7 a week - and most of the time Chris and I do them together so we encourage each other. We've got a great little set-up in the basement, and with a few new hand weights and an extra stability ball we've got quite the little gym area.

I'm loving it! I'm grateful that I am not completely wallowing in my own self pity about temporarily loosing the love of running but getting up and finding an alternative to staying fit and healthy.Already since my marathon I am looking and feeling more toned and I've slimmed down just a little - and I've got rid of a couple of extra pounds I was looking to shift all year (didn't expect to loose them with the marathon training - lots I'd read suggested that some people gain weight so I was happy to at least maintain mine)

And so there you have it. The tale of woe from this self-diagnosed Seasonal Runner.

Today is not that day

When I ran in Chicago there was a sign I saw a couple of times that got me quite emotional (like I didn't have enough seesaw emotions at the time!!) it said,

One day your body won't be able to do this. Today is NOT that day!

How very true. And how very humbling. Yes it was hard going. But it sure did boost me to shut up and get on with it. And to be very thankful of what I have - a healthy body and a wonderful family who were there to support me.

Crockpot BBQ Apple & Bacon Chicken

Ingredients (serves 2)
  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 slices smoky bacon
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 Tbsp soft brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 apples peeled and chopped

  1. In the crockpot combine the BBQ sauce, brown sugar & lemon juice
  2. Wrap each chicken breast with 2 slices of bacon
  3. Place chicken in Crockpot and gently scoop sauce over chicken
  4. Add the chopped apples
  5. Cook on low for 6 hours (check once during cooking and scoop sauce over chicken)

More Menu Planning..

Love, love, love this challenge. I'm still completely buzzed about it. We've used this same old method on and off over the last couple of years probably. But this time it seems different - nothing like sharing in the process with friends and being just a little more accountable than usual.
Last week looked like this;
And it basically worked out...the Spaghetti squash meal was postponed till this coming week. And once again as predicted planning for 6 meals was the way to go. Meal 7 was an impromptu invite to our neighbours for a lovely unhealthy -'fry-up' brunch on the weekend - sausages, eggs, beans, hash browns, tomato (probably the only healthy thing on my plate!) and mushrooms.
We LOVE this meal - thank goodness we don't do it often - but I'll sure as heck enjoy it when I do!! I can recommend it heartily - especially if you're looking to get yourself into an early grave through coronary failure!! ;-) .....sorry was this menu planning about healthy options?!!
On to this week;
Spaghetti Squash was back on the menu after it got skipped last week. We're slowly making our way through our own very special little crop of squash straight from our own garden, so I'm trying to get the right balance of savouring them and making our stash last as long as possible without risking that they go bad (how long does a spaghetti squash last anyway?!). The meatballs planned to go with them last week got skipped and replaced with another gardening success - our cherry tomatoes.

These pickings were from just one plant!! We've got them indoors ripening now and so this week I chopped a batch of ripe ones in half and just simmered them up with a little garlic and seasoning into a sauce then put the mixture straight into mason jars and sealed them - I'm hoping they'll last for a few weeks. For this weeks meal I added some fresh basil and goats cheese to a jar of the sauce base and served over the spaghetti squash. Absolute success!

Instagram love

Meal planning...

This is working out so well for us....this whole meal planning malarky! They say it takes 21 days to make a habit....and we're past that now! That's not to say we haven't made effort to meal plan before but it's never really stuck. Honestly I think a big reason it's working well for us right now is that since our trip to Chicago we have been making a concerted effort to eat out less.

Once again we pretty well stuck to the plan. This was how last week looked;
Last week - Oct 25-31
That Crockpot Mongolian Beef was a hit. I'd made it once before and it was awesome, but I always reckon on trying it out a second time before it's official. And it is now official!! I posted the recipe here.

Crockpot Chicken Teriyaki got traded out for a Crockpot Chicken curry that my husband was inspired to cook up - ain't never gonna complain when I get the evening off when I wasn't expecting!

Cedar Plank Salmon is one of our favourites - and with company last Friday it was the perfect meal to prep and cook up on the BBQ - it got the thumbs up all round - even from Rick who'd never eaten Salmon before!!

Love a good homemade pizza - I have a great pizza dough recipe that I'm super happy with - then we load it chock full of veggies, and a little cheese - and my dough recipe makes enough for 2 meals so guess what's on next weeks plan?!

This week - Nov 1-7
I made the most of what we had building up in the freezer - I've run out of tupperwares and freezer dishes so it's time to start eating up!

I love working with 'what you have'. I find it a fun challenge, a great way to 'tidy up' your pantry and freezers and a good way to have a 'cheap week' at the grocery store! Plus it's interesting reading to see just how long you're supposed to be storing stuff in the freezer - here's a great easy to use chart listing just about everything and the recommended storage periods in both fridge and freezer. I had no idea that bacon is really only good for a month - even in the freezer (Think ours goes a while longer than that sometimes!).

Turkey Cannelloni is taking up freezer space and has been for probably a couple of months - time to eat up!

Pizza Dough is already in the fridge from last week - add to that any random toppings lurking in the veggie drawer of the fridge that need to get used up!

Minestrone Soup - now isn't that an excuse to throw whatever veggies, beans and grains you've got lurking and calling it done?! (because every recipe is different - there IS no recipe!!)

And Pasta Ruccola is one of my own creations - basically wholewheat pasta mixed up from fresh tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, baby arugula & spinach, pesto and a little Parmesan and black pepper - it's an absolute go-to quick and easy meal for us and great way to use up tomatoes (Specially the slightly soft ones). Since we've got 3 flats of tomatoes from the garden slowly ripening in the utility room it's time to up the tomato usage in the coming weeks - we can't eat them fast enough!

Crockpot Mongolian Beef

This dish is so good you'd think it was served up in a restaurant! Don't be put off by the long ingredient list  - it's a bit of faffing around collecting it all together and measuring out but the directions are very simple - just chuck it all in, mix and put the lid on...this is exactly why I love crock pot cooking! 

Ingredients (serves 4)
  • 800g Flank Steak
  • 2 Tbsp Cornstarch
  • 3 cloves Garlic, finely chopped
  • 4 sliced Green onions
  • 1 tsp dried Onion
  • 1/2 cup Soy sauce
  • 3/4 cup White Wine
  • 1/2 Tbsp Wine Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Sesame oil
  • 1 tsp Molasses
  • 1 Tbsp Ginger
  • 1 Tbsp Black pepper
  • 2 tsp Chili flakes
  • 1 Tbsp Peanut or other nut butter
  • 3 Tbsp Brown sugar
  1. Finely slice the meat and sprinkle with the cornstarch to coat
  2. Put all other ingredients in the crock pot and mix well.
  3. Add meat and stir to coat
  4. Cover and cook on low approx 4 hours
This meal did however spark a conversation about how hideous soy sauce is - our low sodium version still had over 30% of the Daily Value - yikes! After a little research into alternatives we are switching to Bragg Liquid Aminos - comments? opinions? I'm looking forward to trying it and seeing if the taste is different and how it works as a direct sub!

Meli's 1/2 year Birthday!

She's 6 months old already! Where did the time go? It seems so 'the norm' to have her around, the waggy tail when you walk in the door, the snuggles, and curled up ball of hair sleeping at you feet when you're working at your desk. Oh, and the hairs all over every last bit of clothing you own, standing outside waiting for her to pee in the cold, dark, rain (because she doesn't like the rain, so won't go out by herself if it's raining - so you have to leash her and pull her out, then stand around like a spare part whilst she does her business!!) That eager face in the rear view mirror of the car when you take a drive....!

It's already hard to remember how little she was when she arrived here! Thankfully we've come a long way since then. She's great around the house these days. We've taught her to ring a bell which we've hung on the front door to signal that she needs to go out. It's supposed to be when she needs to go out to pee...but mostly she rings it just if she needs wants to go out, or we're not paying her enough attention, or pretty much without fail if we've just sat down to eat. She's a clever little monkey like that!! She gave up her crate about 6 weeks ago. Now she just sleeps on her big girl bed in the mud room - for now there's still a gate across the doorway to keep her confined, but I'm not sure she'd go wandering anyway - she sleeps right through the night - we're normally the ones that wake her come the morning!

She's already at 34lbs, and standing around 20 inches. She's so lean right now - skinny almost - but we've been packing in the food so she certainly ain't going hungry! It's difficult to know how much more she'll grow - these days I certainly have trouble picking her up. I don't think she realises that she's gotten so big - she'll still climb up onto our laps and try and curl up - but it doesn't work quite the same as it used to!!

She wasn't the water-baby we were hoping for this summer. Pretty unsure of the water in fact - hopefully that'll change next year?! She does love the beach though - sand, fine gravel, loose dirt - she goes crazy for! Loves digging and scrambling around like a lunatic! She's been great at 'fetch' right from day one - her enthusiasm and energy for fetching sticks and balls is so far endless!

She makes us laugh. She makes our little family complete. She makes us love even more.xx (even if she does look like a Gremlin in that last photo!)
